Another winter storm moves into Maryland

Snow, ice fall in Maryland early Monday morning

BALTIMORE —A storm that began as rain Sunday evening turned into freezing rain, sleet and snow going into the early-morning hours Monday, and bands of snow are expected to continue throughout the day.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Maryland that took effect Sunday evening and lasts through Monday. See where the advisory is in effect here
Baltimore City has issued a Code Blue alert through Wednesday night, and many school systems have decided to close for Monday. See list of closings
11 Insta-Weather PLUS meteorologist Ava Marie said an arctic cold front pushed into Maryland around 6 p.m. Sunday.  The rain started shortly thereafter, and freezing rain, sleet and snow began mixing in by early Monday morning.
Marie said the snow will be powdery, which means it can stack up faster.  She said the snow should be heaviest mid-morning and should clear out of the metro region by 3 p.m.
By then, Marie said 6-10 inches of snow will have fallen along the I-95 corridor, with closer to 4-8 inches of snow in the northern Baltimore suburbs.  Areas along the Pennsylvania border will get around 3-6 inches.
Marie said for the first time this winter, the largest amounts of snow are expected south of Baltimore.  Washington, D.C., and Annapolis could get anywhere from 8-14 inches of snow.
If the speed of the front changes, the snow totals could change as well.
Marie said the region should top out in the mid- to low-20's Monday, with temperatures dipping into the single digits going into Tuesday.
