FAA planning new air traffic control tower for BWI

FAA still determining whether it will build new facility or renovate current one

LINTHICUM, Md. —BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport could soon be getting a new air traffic control tower.

The airport was originally built in 1950. The last time a new tower was installed was in 1983, when the airport handled just over 5 million passengers a year.
That number has grown to 22.7 million passengers a year.
The Federal Aviation Administration said it's in the early stages of planning the new tower and is still determining when funding will be available.
The FAA also said it is working with BWI officials to determine whether it will build a new facility for the tower or if it would renovate the old tower over Concourse C.
