Storm impacting holiday travel in Maryland
An inch of rain has fallen in Maryland as a large storm continues to move up the East Coast, bringing rain and snow to many areas.
While most of the Baltimore region has only seen rain so far, a winter weather advisory was issued for much of Tuesday by the National Weather Service. By the evening, it remained in effect only for Frederick, Garrett, Allegany, and Washington counties until midnight Tuesday.
By 11 p.m. Tuesday, an inch of rain had fallen at Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport with much more to come overnight and during the day Wednesday.
The rain may taper off overnight and into the early-morning hours, but another burst of it is likely to come, 11 Insta-Weather PLUS Chief Meteorologist Tom Tasselmyer said. Temperatures were rising and staying above freezing Tuesday evening, keeping the precipitation as rain.
As cold air from the west comes in, the rain could mix with a little bit of snow. Temperatures will be in the 40s before dawn Wednesday but will fall throughout the day down to the 30s by the evening.
Tasselmyer said warmer air was trying to work its way into the Baltimore area overnight, except in some parts of western Maryland, where the temperatures were at or just below freezing.
Moderate to heavy rain should be expected in the Baltimore area Wednesday with a burst of snow showers in the far northwestern suburbs.
The storm clears by the evening, giving way to sunny days Thursday and Friday. Western Maryland could see as much as 4 to 8 inches of snow with high temperatures only in the 20s on Wednesday and even colder on Thanksgiving Day.
Those going to the Baltimore Ravens game on Thanksgiving night can expect temperatures to drop into the 20s.
Meanwhile, as much as 6 inches of snow has fallen in some areas of western Pennsylvania.
