Wife charged in stabbing death of Army husband

Body of Johnnie Sutton III found in Laurel home Friday; Wife Marquita Sutton charged
LAUREL, Md. —An Army wife has been charged with killing her husband after his body was found inside their Laurel home Friday morning.
Anne Arundel County police said they found the body of Johnnie Sutton III inside the couple's home in the 8300 block of Frostwood Drive. Police charged Sutton's wife, 30-year-old Marquita Berry-Sutton, with second-degree murder in the case.
Officers said they found Johnnie Sutton stabbed to death in an upstairs room on Friday morning after Army officials called police when the 38-year-old didn't show up to work. Marquita Sutton turned herself in to police a day later.
"She was very friendly. We always spoke when I did see her every now and then. She seemed like a friendly person," said neighbor Michael Gaither, who lives a few doors down. "It was shocking, very shocking."
While investigators didn't say how they connected the wife to the slaying, they said they were able to do so quickly.
Detectives said they also believe the couple's 21-month-old child was inside when the stabbing happened. The child wasn't hurt.
Investigators are trying to figure out what made Berry-Sutton apparently snap.
"It is a lot to figure out, and to see if there's any history there -- any indication that something like this could happen," said police Lt. T.J. Smith.
11 News checked records and discovered that police were never called to the home in the few months the couple had lived there, but Friday -- seven hours before Johnnie Sutton's body was found -- officers said they did show up at the home after a vague 911 call; however, they didn't find anything suspicious.
Berry-Sutton is being held at the Anne Arundel County Detention Center. Police said the couple's child is in the custody of family members.
