Baltimore City leaders are on a new push to make Charm City a shopping destination, and they're getting help through a new Zagat retail guide survey.
Known for its restaurant guides around the world, Zagat will be in Baltimore on Saturday in partnership with Visit Baltimore to survey people in target neighborhoods to find out where they like to shop and why.
"They're going to have a street team, so you'll see them in their Zagat T-shirts, and they're going to have Chromebooks. We'll be with them on the Baltimore Trolley, so look for that signature trolley around town. We're going to be in Hampden, Harbor East, the Inner Harbor and Fells Point," said Visit Baltimore spokeswoman Sara Warfield.
Amuse Toys in Fells Point has been open for about a decade and has a chance to become a tourist destination. It's one of 64 shops in the Baltimore area nominated to appear in the new retail guide.
"We're excited that they've chosen these neighborhoods that really reflect Main Street and the uniqueness of Baltimore," said Claudia Towls, the co-owner of Amuse Toys.
Baltimore has been chosen for one of four live surveys this quarter, and there are plans to expand the retail survey across the country.
"We're joining the likes of Boston, New York, Barcelona and the French Riviera. They're really big names in retail, so it would be great for Baltimore to be included," Warfield said.
For small business owners like Towls, a spot in the Zagat guide would be huge.
"That's a huge component that, as an individual retailer myself, I've always wanted to see some sort of national attention to the many independent retailers we have here in Baltimore," she said.
Those who are interested can fill out the survey online and explain why they feel their favorite store should be included. Voting ends Feb. 19.
