Snow storm leaves several inches of snow in northern Baltimore suburbs

Storm tapers off mid-Monday afternoon; Ice in forecast Wednesday
BALTIMORE —A storm that brought mostly rain to Baltimore Monday morning, left behind several inches of snow to the north.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for some portions of the viewing area but canceled it by the mid-afternoon. Other areas had been under a winter storm advisory.
While winter storm advisories were canceled for Monday, the weather service issued a winter storm watch for Tuesday night into Wednesday when a storm is forecast to bring freezing rain. Click here to see which counties
Temperatures remained well above freezing late Sunday night and into Monday morning. As of 5:30 a.m. Monday, it was 39 degrees in Baltimore.
The storm changed over to snow in the northwest suburbs by about 7:30 a.m.
The heaviest accumulations came between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. About 1-5 inches of snow fell to the north and west of Baltimore.
The precipitation began to taper off around 3 p.m.
"Unlike the past couple snowstorms, this is going to be more the typical Maryland snowstorm with some getting rain and others getting snow," Insta-Weather PLUS Meteorologist Tony Pann said Sunday.
Highway crews get started early
Meanwhile, State Highway Administration crews began pre-treating the roads around 2 a.m. Monday and plan to work through the storm. Officials told 11 News that state crews are prepared for whatever comes their way.
The agency has already worked 23 active storm operations so far this winter, but agency spokesman David Buck said it always helps when the public knows what to expect.
"If we get an inch or two of thick, dense, heavy, wet snow, that's the most challenging we deal with. So obviously wake up tomorrow and check what is in the forecast and what might happen," Buck said.
Over the past five years, the state said it has spent about $70 million treating Maryland's roadways. The agency said it has already spent that much this year alone.
