Rescuers help child impaled with rebar while sledding

Incident happened late Monday morning in Jarrettsville

 JARRETTSVILLE, Md. —Harford County emergency officials said a child was impaled by a metal rod Monday during a sledding accident in Jarrettsville.

Police were called to the 3600 block of Anderson Lane around 11:45 a.m. Monday.
Firefighters and emergency crews worked to help a 10-year-old girl who had been impaled in the back with a piece of rebar that was protruding from the ground. Rebar is a steel bar that's commonly used as a tension device to reinforce concrete or masonry structures.
It took firefighters nearly 20 minutes to saw through the metal rod so the girl could be freed.
The girl was taken to a regional pediatric trauma facility, where she's listed in serious condition.
