170 shave heads for cancer research, support

St. Baldrick's Foundation helps children battling cancer

MIDDLE RIVER, Md. —More than 170 volunteers are sporting shaved heads Monday to support cancer patients.

The men, women and children had their heads shaved at Martin's East on Sunday as part of the sixth annual St. Baldrick's Foundation fundraiser.
The volunteers said goodbye to their locks to show support for children battling cancer and to raise money for cancer research around the world.
"A lot of times when kids get sick, you want to do something so bad, but frankly, there's not a whole lot you can do all the time for kids who are sick or families of kids who are sick. This is kind of our chance to stand up and say, 'Hey, we're behind you 100 percent. We're here for you, we'll do anything for you, and we'll try to do all we can to stop it in the future,'" said event organizer Dan Jarkiewicz.
More than 1,000 people came out to cheer on the volunteers. Organizers said they raised more than $130,000.
