Jim Irsay arrest sets poor example for professional sports

Indianapolis Colts owner arrested on DUI charges

Influential billionaire Jim Irsay made the headlines, but for the wrong reason.

The owner of the Indianapolis Colts was arrested and preliminarily charged with four felony counts of possession of a controlled substance and a misdemeanor charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
This has not been a good year for professional sports teams as far as arrests are concerned. Statistics shows that 38 professional athletes were arrested in the month of February alone.
The 54-year old Irsay was stopped by police for erratic driving and they found prescription drugs and pill bottles in his vehicle. He failed several roadside sobriety tests and embarrassed his team and the NFL.
After spending the night in a suburban Indianapolis jail, he checked himself into a treatment facility. In 2002, Irsay admitted his addiction to pain killers, but now that personal battle has become public.
With no previous criminal record, legal experts said it is unlikely he will do jail time. In the court of public opinion, he is likely to be a poor example for professional sports.
